Dormer windows in Rhondda Cynon Taf
We design, build and weatherproof dormer windows and dormer loft conversions for homeowners across Rhondda Cynon Taf, working from first survey through to building control sign-off.
Dormers on Rhondda Cynon Taf roofs
Most of the dormer work we take on around Rhondda Cynon Taf is on Victorian and Edwardian terraces, interwar semi-detached houses and post-war bungalows, where the ridge height and the position of the existing purlins set the limits.
We survey the roof before quoting anything. Ridge height, rafter span, purlin position and the condition of the existing structure decide which dormer forms are possible — and there is no substitute for a tape measure in the loft. The survey is free and carries no obligation.
Planning permission in Rhondda Cynon Taf
Whether you need planning permission or a lawful development certificate depends on the elevation, the volume already used and the local authority's Article 4 position — all of which we confirm before design work starts.
What we do across Rhondda Cynon Taf
We only do dormers. That sounds like a limitation until you have watched a general builder improvise a back gutter on a wet Thursday.
- New dormers — flat roof, pitched, gable-fronted, hipped, shed, box, L-shaped, eyebrow and cat slide forms
- Full conversions — structure, staircase, insulation, plaster and building control sign-off
- Glazing — uPVC, timber, aluminium, sash and heritage-profile conservation windows
- Cladding and roofing — tile-hung, slate-hung, lead, standing-seam zinc, cedar and GRP
- Repairs — leak tracing, flashing renewal, rot repair and blown unit replacement
The quickest route is a photograph of the rear elevation over WhatsApp — we can usually tell you what is feasible before anyone visits.

Judged on the junctions, not the sales pitch
“The survey was the useful bit — he told us the ridge height wouldn't take what we'd been sold elsewhere, and offered a shed dormer instead. Glad we listened.”
— Homeowner, Rhondda Cynon Taf“Scaffold went up on the Monday, roof was open and weathertight by the Thursday. No drama, no surprises on the invoice.”
— Homeowner, Rhondda Cynon Taf“We'd had two leaks patched by other firms. They traced it to the back gutter in an hour and it hasn't come back since.”

FAQs
Dormers in Rhondda Cynon Taf — FAQs
Can you match my existing roof tiles?
Usually. Most common clay and concrete profiles are still in production or available reclaimed, and we source a match at survey stage so you see it before work starts. Where a discontinued profile cannot be matched exactly, we normally recommend taking tiles from a less visible slope for the dormer and using the closest new match on the hidden elevation.
What is the difference between a dormer and a Velux?
A rooflight sits flush in the roof slope and gives you light without any extra height — you still have a sloping ceiling. A dormer projects out from the roof and creates vertical walls with a level ceiling behind them, so you gain genuinely usable standing space and floor area, not just daylight.
How wide can a dormer be?
Structurally, as wide as the roof — full-width rear dormers regularly run six to eight metres, carried on a steel ridge beam. The limits are usually planning volume allowances and the setbacks needed at eaves and ridge, rather than what can be built.
How disruptive is a dormer build?
Less than people expect, because most of the work happens above your ceilings and is reached from the scaffold. The noisy phases are opening up and installing steels, typically two to four days. Once the staircase is cut in there is dust and traffic through the house, and we sheet and protect the route for that period.
Can a dormer include an en-suite?
Very often, yes — a full-width or L-shaped dormer usually has enough floor area for a bedroom plus a shower room. The practical constraints are getting soil and waste down to an existing stack, and whether the head height over the shower tray works. Both are settled at survey.
Can you build a dormer in winter?
Yes, with adjustments. Temporary weather protection over the scaffold lets structural work continue in most conditions. GRP roofing needs dry conditions above about 5°C to cure properly, so in a cold spell we either sequence it differently or specify EPDM, which is unaffected.
